Welcome to the 158th instalment of our first impression video series. Today, we are playing the Playstation 4 game, Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair for the first time. You can check out the video directly on YouTube or in the embed below:

It’s kind of surprising I ended up playing this game first as opposed to the game before this, but this has been a game series I’ve been wanting to play for a while just to see where the spiritual successor of Banjo Kazooie ended up going. This game, however, is a bit of a departure (as is my understanding anyway) to the previous game, so the similarities may not be quite as apparent to the two franchises on first blush.

Definitely got taken aback by the introduction of the impossible lair, though, but that was the really hard level I took on right after the introductory level. I was, admittedly, still getting used to the controls, though, so it’s probably not a surprise that I didn’t make it very far on my first attempt. It’s apparently a level that you take on later on in the game, but you get a taste of it early as you can see in the video.

I am kind of curious to see where this game goes, though. It certainly had a fun charm to it overall while I was playing.

For those who have played this game already, what are your thoughts on this? Was this a great spinoff game to the (as of this writing) two games or did you think this was a bit of a step back for the series?

For those who have only played the other game in the series, what did you think of what you saw with this game? Does this look like a game you’d be interested in playing or do you have preferences for the more open 3D world adventure style games?

Also, for those who have never played these games at all, have you ever heard of these games? Does this give you some sense of nostalgia just watching this style of game or does it look like a game that plays a bit too closely to old style games? Let us know in the comments below!

This video is part of our first impression video series. Below is a list of 50 of the previously made first impression video’s we’ve made in the past:
