This review covers the techno industrial track 808 State – One in Ten.
The track was released in 1993 on the album Gorgeous.
The track starts with a filtered drum kit. The filter sounds like a phaser effect. Shortly after, the vocals take the track into the first verse.
Shortly after, the vocals take the track into the main chorus. This is capped off with an instrumental section. During this section, there is some subtle scratching along with a 303-like synth. After that, a brass element comes in. From there, a bassline starts up.
The track then builds back up again as the vocals take the track into another round in the main chorus. A subtle organ key element comes in as well for a little bit. The synth instrumental section then comes in. A drum solo then comes in with some scratching in the background. A synth effect then takes the track out.
This is one of those tracks that just leaves a bit to be desired for me. The vocals to sound alright, but while what is there is pretty decent, there is so little of those vocals. As a result, am left a bit disappointed by that.
Additionally, there are some nice sounds that are used here. Unfortunately, their appearances are so brief, that they leave me with the impression that this is just a random set of sounds strung together in an almost random fashion. There’s just no real flow in this track.
To top things off, the track winds up being rather short. With so little going on in the track, there just isn’t much to fully appreciate in the track. It’s because what’s good only exists for a fleeting moment before it disappears again.
Overall, this track has that flash in the pan effect. You get something interesting, but it doesn’t last long. The vocals are not bad and some of the elements added are pretty good. Unfortunately, their appearances are so short, that it’s hard to really appreciate any of it. So, a fairly mediocre track at the end of the day.
