This review covers the punk rock track My Chemical Romance – I’m Not Okay (I Promise).
This track was released in 2004 on the album Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge. This track also appears in the Playstation 2 game Burnout 3: Takedown.
The track starts off with a guitar. The drum kit then comes in. After that, the lead guitars largely take over. From there, the vocals come in for a verse. The lead guitars largely drop out for the vocals.
When the lead guitars return, the vocals take the track into the main chorus. A brief instrumental section caps off this section.
The vocals then take the track into the next verse similarly to the first verse. After that, the vocals carry the track into the main chorus. A guitar solo then comes in after that.
From there, the vocals repeat parts of the main chorus. Suddenly, the vocals whisper a part of the main chorus. This is backed by a piano. The lead guitar returns as the vocals continue with a modified version of the main chorus. After that, the vocals repeat the main chorus more normally. The guitars and drum kit lead the track out.
A real strength of this track is the premise of the lyrics. You have a track that might otherwise be a sort of celebratory or upbeat sound and mix it in with some absurd and faintly disturbing lyrics. Because of this, there is that sense of insanity throughout the track that somehow manages to work incredibly well all things considered.
Another strength of this track is the lead guitars. They have a very full sound and really give this track an interesting sound thanks to the lyrics.
Additionally, the piano element randomly thrown in the middle of the track works quite well.
Finally, the vocals are also on point in my view. They simply sound great throughout the track.
Overall, this is a great track worth listening to. It has a rather creative premise in the lyrics. Mixed with great guitars, an interesting piano element, and great vocals, you got a very solid listening experience. So, a great track worth listening to.
