This review covers the alternative rock track Semisonic – Closing Time.
This track was released in 1998 on the album Feeling Strangely Fine.
The track starts off with some guitars. A piano joins the track. The vocals then come in for a verse. This continues for a bit.
The lead guitars and drum kit then joins the track as the vocals take the track into the main chorus.
Right after that, the vocals take the track into the next verse. The lead guitars drop out at this point as well.
When the lead guitars come in, the vocals take the track into another round in the main chorus. This is capped off with a piano solo. This is backed by a filtered drum it. The drum kit then comes in full as a guitar solo comes in.
After that, the vocals take the track into the next verse. This is very short as the vocals quickly pull the track back into the main chorus. The main chorus is repeated. An instrumental section then follows.
Many of the elements then drop out as the vocals return for a short verse. Right after that, the piano quickly leads the track out.
This is one of those tracks that have positives and negatives. A positive is that the main chorus is actually decent. It brings everything together and even offers a hint of being catchy.
The negative is the verses. There’s not much energy going on and the lyrics are quite repetitive. If there is one thing I can say really holds this track back, it’s easily the verses.
When you combine both, this track has a real stop and start feel to it overall. It winds up having that “decent, boring, decent, boring, decent, boring” rhythm.
Overall, this is a passable track. The main chorus is quite decent. Unfortunately, the verses hold this track back quite a bit. An OK track, but nothing overly memorable.
