This review covers the nu metal track Papa Roach – Last Resort.
This track was released in 2000 on the album Infest.
The track starts off with a vocal solo. Guitars then join the track with short notes before the longer notes take over.
After that, the vocals take the track into the first verse. The guitars pull back a bit. From there, the lead guitars hit the longer notes as the vocals go through a part of the main chorus. This is capped off with an instrumental section.
From there, the vocals take the track into the next verse. After that, they hit the full main chorus. The guitars follow the pattern of shorter notes in verse and longer in the chorus. This is capped off with whispering vocals. After that, the vocals continue on with a bridge which is followed by the main chorus.
At that point, the vocals hit a screaming section with parts of the main chorus being repeated. The screaming part ends and parts of the main chorus is repurposed. The vocals then end and the lead guitars quickly follow suit.
One very strong part of this track is the guitars all around. They really give this track a sense of progression and an ebb and flow which works really well. The melodies they hit both when they have a strong and weaker presence makes this track shine quite a bit.
Meanwhile, the vocals work very well too. You have mostly singing, a whispering section and even a part where screaming takes place. All of it actually adds positively to the track. They add some nicely done raw emotion without really losing any of that enunciation or making the track sound worse in any way.
My only real complaint with this track is that I’m not entirely sure the lyrics are as strong as they could have been. Some parts work well and others somehow sound a bit weak. This is just a minor critique given that the whole track is so strong.
Overall, this is a great track. It has some nicely done vocals and great guitar work. Lyrics may not be quite as high standard, but still, this track is a great one all around.
