This review covers the alternative rock track Our Lady Peace – Right behind You (Mafia).
This track was released in 2000 on the album Spiritual Machines.
The track starts with a guitar, drum kit, and a filtered repeating vocal. Right after, the main vocal starts in. Shortly after, the lead guitars join in. After a bit, the vocals hit the main chorus. These main vocals are joined by backup vocals.
Going into the next section, the repeated vocals return. Right after, the vocals take the track into the next verse. From there, the vocals carry the track into the main chorus, joined by the lead guitars. At the end, the vocals continue with a delay effect applied to them.
From there, the track largely drops out, leaving just the main vocals to repeat a part of the main chorus. After that, the lead guitars and drum kit return, repeating the main chorus in full. At the end, the vocals drop out and the guitars lead the track out.
One thing I do like about this track is that it has a nice uplifting sound to it. If you like rock, but don’t like angry tones, this track is definitely a recommended one to listen to.
Another positive with this track is that it has some nice flow throughout. The lead guitars fill the track out nicely, offering a good amount of energy. At the same time, there is some nice more quiet parts to give this track a good dynamic sound throughout. On top of this, that back and forth actually adds a nice slow rhythm throughout.
The vocals also work quite well. They actually echo that ebb and flow of the guitars quite nicely. They are clear and they work very well.
If I could nitpick on anything, it would be that the lyrics have a subtle amount of forcefulness to it. More specifically, the themes might be a bit on the exaggerated side which can make this track gently offputting in a way. Still, though, this is a minor complaint from me as it’s not that prominent.
Overall, this track is very refreshing and pleasant to listen to. It has a nice uplifting vibe throughout. The guitars and vocals work very well. Even though some of the lyrics might be laid on a bit thick, it’s still a very worthwhile track to listen to.
