This review covers the trance track Simon Foy – Insideout (Freefall Mix).
This track was released in 2001 as a single. It was released along with another mix.
The track starts with a kick, snare, and high hat. Some filtering is then applied for a moment. After that, the bassline joins the track. Some filtering is also applied to the bassline. The hats then rejoin the track. An additional high hat joins the track. A reverse cymbal makes an appearance and the drum kit drops out. A synth effect makes an appearance.
The drum kit then makes a return. Another reverse cymbal appears and another synth joins the track. After an additional reverse cymbal, a synth melody joins the track. Parts the track gradually have the resonance increase. Filtering then gets put on the synth melody.
Large parts of the track drops out and a second synth melody joins the track. A bassline joins in. A snare roll makes an appearance. A reverse cymbal makes an appearance and the whole track drops out. The first synth melody rejoins the track. This is paired with a temporary snare roll. The drum kit and bassline then returns. The second synth melody then rejoins the track. That second synth melody has another synth layered on top of it.
After a reverse cymbal, the synth melodies drop out, leaving the bassline and drum kit. This continues for a bit. A reverse cymbal then makes an appearance, leading the track out.
One thing that sticks out for me is the duel synth melodies. Separately, they both sound great. The way they are bought in and the way they get pulled back out is nicely done. When combined, they sound OK, but not amazing. I’m not sure if there is something that conflicts with the melodies, but they sound better separately.
Overall, this is an OK track. It has good melodies. When separate, they sound quite good. Combined? That’s a bit of an issue. Still, it is, otherwise, well constructed. So, a decent track all around.
