This review covers the trance track Perpetuous Dreamer – Dust.Wav (Armin van Buuren’s Rising Star Mix).
This track was released in 2002 as a single. It was released along with the track Dub.wav.
The track starts with a general drum kit and bassline. After a reverse cymbal, an effect makes an appearance. Another reverse cymbal makes an appearance and a choir element makes a brief appearance. An additional effect later and the clap joins the track. After another effect, another synth joins the track. The choir element makes another brief appearance and an additional high hat joins the track. Another synth then joins the track.
From there, a filtered vocal sample joins the track in a distorted manner. A synth melody then joins the track. A slow sweep with a side chain effect is applied and some synths lead the track into a drop. A synth pad takes over. From there, the vocals join the track for a verse. After that, the vocals take the track into the main chorus. A synth also joins when the vocals hit the main chorus.
After that, the vocals repeat the main chorus with the rest of the track rejoining the track. This is capped off with an additional synth melody taking over. The vocals have dropped out at this stage.
An effect makes an appearance and the vocals replace the synth melody. Those vocals take the track into the next verse. When the vocals take the track into the main chorus, most of the other elements drop out. A synth then joins the track part way through. At the end of the main chorus, an instrumental section takes over with the rest of the elements rejoining the track.
The main synth melody then drops out and synth chords then take over. A reverse cymbal makes an appearance and the chords drop out. A few more effects and a snare roll later, another synth drops out. From there, the effects make occasional appearances again. The sweep makes another appearance and the drum kit drops out for the most part. The choir element then leads the track out.
One thing that is great about the track is the vocals. They really elevate this track in terms of quality. What’s more is the interesting production decision to have the main chorus often becoming a solo. Most tracks I listen to have everything come together during the main chorus, but this one took an interestingly different approach. The elements largely get pushed aside and just allowed the vocals to fully take over. In this case, it made the track even better given how great they were.
The other elements worked quite well. Those synth melodies and backing synths work very well to offset the vocals and give the track a nice variety.
Overall, this is a very solid track. It has great vocals and some interesting creative concepts throughout. The synths work quite well. So, definitely a track that gets a thumbs up from me.
