With the controversial C-10 legislation moving ahead in the senate, we look back and list all the MPs who voted for and against the legislation.
The Liberals have seemingly never been so determined to pass legislation. The problem is that that legislation is Bill C-10 – Canada’s speech regulation bill. How determined are they to make this bill pass? They are willing to bend and break every rule and democratic norm to make it happen. Recently, that was on full display when they convinced the Senate to extend the sitting days in an effort to pass this legislation.
For me, personally, I have witnessed the Canadian government trying to crack down on digital rights on many occasions. Whether it is to implement lawful access (AKA dragnet surveillance), the Canadian DMCA, or a host of other bad bills. So many of them died on the order paper when an election was called in the past. With this extension, we are in uncharted territory. I have never seen a government go to this extreme to crack down on digital rights in my life. That is saying something considering I’ve covered activities by the Canadian government since 2005. What we are witnessing today is complete and utter insanity.
Of course, we are in a minority parliament. So, if a bad bill is to be passed, then the party is going to need, in the eyes of digital rights advocates, accomplices. So, we decided to offer a list of who voted for and against this speech regulation bill. Remember, if you want to find your MP quickly, use CTRL+F and type part of that MP’s name. You should be able to find him or her quickly that way – especially with the up and down arrows next to the search field.
We found this list via the House of Commons website. So, knowing that this bill is devoid of Section 4.1, these are the MPs who voted for and against this legislation:

The final tally is 196 to 112. This means that the bill was (as we know) passed.
Some notable votes include the Green Party. We weren’t sure which side of the free speech debate they are on. As we can see above, the party sided with Steven Guilbeault and voted against free speech. Another notable vote is Charlie Angus of the NDP. As we know from years past, Angus had fought hard against various attacks on digital rights. This includes the multiple attempts to implement the Canadian DMCA as well as the dragnet surveilance legislation of years past. As a result, he quickly became a well regarded name in the fight for digital rights. While he seemed like one of the MPs from the party to offer a backbone, it seems that backbone had been left behind as he voted against free speech. To say that this is a hugely disappointing development in the eyes of digital rights advocates would be an understatement.
While people may say that they will remember this dark day in Canadian history when they go to the polls, there is a huge problem here. Who do you vote for to defend your rights? Yes, the Conservative party had a stopped clock being right moment by voting against this, but we know full well that they have a long history of being supporters of lawful access and the Canadian DMCA. Meanwhile, the Canadian Pirate Party is probably going to be absent from this next election as well (and maybe even never make a comeback ever at this rate). So, Canadians are in an awkward moment in political history where no political party can be trusted to stand up for human rights. It’s a terrible scenario, but one that seems to be playing out now.
