Canadian firm Dawn Riding Films Inc. has filed a lawsuit against 193 BitTorrent users who it accused of sharing the 2012 remake film Dawn Rider.
In two court documents recently obtained by Freezenet, 193 Jon Doe’s were accused of copyright infringement. Both suits were filed in the Eastern Division Ohio courts. The first 65 Jon Does were mentioned in case No. 2:13-cv-44. The last 64 defendants were mentions in case No. 2:13-cv-46. Freezenet didn’t gain access to the remaining third Jon Doe’s.
The film in question was a remake of a 1935 wester movie. According to IMDB, it had a budget of $5,000,000. IMDB also has an aggregate score of 4.8/10 where 1,415 users rated it. We were unable to find information on overall revenue both in the Box Office and in DVD sales.
In the mean time, Rotten Tomatoes has a user aggregate score of 25%.
It is unclear what Riding Films hopes to accomplish with this, but they are asking for the usual statutory damages. It is unlikely going to be given that given the precedent set by the Jammie Thomas and Joel Tenenbaum cases.
