Review: Walk the Moon – Shut Up and Dance (Pop Rock)

This review covers the pop rock track – Shut Up and Dance.

This track was released in 2014 as part of the album Talking is Hard.

The main element of this track was definitely the vocals. They were about the only thing really consistent in this track. They were OK, but did have that “I’ve heard this sound before” tinge to it. I thought a little more originality would have helped things in this area.

The lyrics, unfortunately, contained numerous cliche’s throughout the track. When lyrics have cliches – especially multiple ones – then it gives the impression that this track has some originality issues. It also made this track sound tired and old right from the very first listen and also robs the ability for me to want to hear this track multiple times.

There were certainly numerous rock elements throughout the track. The use of multiple styles was definitely a risk. Sometimes, multiple styles pays off. Unfortunately, I don’t think it did in this track. The reason it didn’t was because I can hear that soft rock, cut, rock, cut, soft rock, cut, metal, cut, soft rock. The elements by themselves weren’t bad, but the way they were seemingly smashed together gives this track a bit of a jarring sound to it. I thought it was a nice idea, but unfortunately, it was poorly executed.

The only real positive thing I can find in this track was the mastering was decent. No one element really drowned out another necessarily here.

At the end of the day, this ends up being a really average track. There are some interesting ideas in this track, but the execution was unfortunately lacking. The vocals were consistent, but the lyrics were laced with tired and worn out cliche’s. The blending of different styles of rock might have sounded good on paper, but the execution seemed to foil this otherwise interesting plan. As a result, this track is quite forgettable.
