This review covers the liquid drum n bass track Mind Vortex – Stand High.
This track was released in 2015 on an EP. It was released with three other tracks.
The track starts off with some string, synth and drum n bass elements. A number of elements drop off when the vocals come in (save for the synth). After that, the track builds up with other drum n bass elements.
After that, the vocals drop off. There’s some plucked synth dotting the audio landscape along with the main synth with the standard percussion sound. There’s an additional percussion section before the main drop. From here, the vocals build the track up, joined by some of the main lead synths. After that, the vocals drop off and the lead synths take over. The vocals join up with the track shortly after. The track ends with some pads and a synth chord finishing up the track.
The lyrics delve into a couple of different themes. One of those themes is general disappointment. Initially, this is a surprising theme for a track with such a fresh sound to it. The thing is, another theme is standing up to adversity and not standing for it any more. That’s where the overall sound winds up working quite well because it emotionally fits the overall sound.
The general flow is pretty good. The highs and lows might be a little extreme, but the build-ups and transition helps alleviate this a lot. The logical flow also allows this sort of thing to make sense.
As for the vocals, they work pretty well. Female vocals with such great emotional dimension is great to hear. I often come across so many pop tracks where the vocals are muddied by flat emotional themes like sex, seduction, and break-ups. This track shows that female vocals are capable of carrying so many other emotions. It’s basically a nice breath of fresh air as far as I’m concerned.
Generally speaking, this is a very good track. It has great emotion written into the lyrics. The vocals work very well, and the string and synth mix well into the drum n bass sound. A very enjoyable track.
