This review covers the pop track Sinead O’Connor – Nothing Compares 2 U.
This track was released in 1990 as part of a single.
The track starts off with a variety of strings. After a moment, the vocals start to come in. From there, the track starts to build up with a slow drum kit.
Piano elements join in and the track comes into the main chorus. After this, the track smoothly transitions into the next verse. Some lyrics start to become more emphasized towards the end of the verse.
The main chorus comes in again. This is topped off with a string instrumental section. This instrumental section is joined by a choir element part way through. After more strings, the vocals come back in. The choir elements also make an appearance in the vocal portion as well.
After this, the main chorus comes in again. This instance of the main chorus has some additional emphasis on certain words. The track then fades off with an emphasis on the piano which is backed by the string elements.
For me, the slower tempo does work in this tracks favour. Given the themes in the lyrics, it makes sense to have a slower more moody tempo. So, this does work in the tracks favour.
Another positive is the string instrumental section. This does break up the track nicely and adds some much needed variety here.
The only problem I see with this track is that there is very little distinguishing he main chorus and the verse. Ideally, you’d want something that elevates the main chorus in some way. In this track, nothing ever does do this because a lot of what makes the main chorus good is also found in the verses.
In the end, this is an alright track. The slower tempo and the strings and piano really help set the mood pushed by the lyrics. The instrumental sections do help give the track a little variety. How much variety is found in the track is not much, but at least there is some effort to be had here. So, an overall decent track as far as I’m concerned.
