This review covers the pop track Wilson Phillips – Hold On.
This track was released in 1990 as a single.
The track starts with some simple drum kit elements. As the string elements come in, some piano elements join the track. After this, the vocals come in. Some elements like an electric guitar and a more pronounced drum kit does come in to build the track up.
The main chorus does come in and is capped off with a brief guitar solo. When the next verse comes in, the electric guitar sticks around. After this, the main chorus comes in.
When the main chorus finishes, the track pulls back to the point where all there is are the vocals and piano. From there, the track builds back up going into the main chorus. When the main chorus starts to repeat, the track quickly fades out.
The first thing I found about this track was that the lyrics are a bit on the cliche side of things. The way the cliche’s are put in the track, it makes it sound like there is a certain degree of unimaginative writing. While the uplifting themes are nice, it’s hard to get past the cliches.
Meanwhile, the vocals are pretty good. The way they are layered and presented in a solo fashion both work out nicely.
The piano and strings are alright, but nothing too impressive.
Overall, this is an alright track, but the lyrics are cliched and unimaginative. If you get past the cliche lyrics, the vocals may be pretty good, but the overall sound doesn’t have anything in there to make this track a particularly exciting one. A fairly mediocre track when all is said and done.
