Review: Black Box – Strike It Up (Original Mix) (House)

This review covers the house track Black Box – Strike It Up (Original Mix).

This track was released in 1991 as part of a single.

The track starts off with a vocal sample as well as a subtle 303 synth. A synth effect is also added every so often. Some brass elements also join the track to provide a general melody. The high hat also comes in along with the kick. A bassline also joins the track along with an additional vocal sample.

At this point, the main vocals come in going straight into the main vocals. Secondary vocals then join the track, capping off the main chorus. These secondary vocals follow largely a hip hop style.

In the next section, the main vocals re-join the track to continue along the verse. An instrumental section follows that with some samples. From there, the main chorus comes in which features both styles of vocals. towards the end, a violin element also joins the track.

An instrumental section follows with some vocal samples. This section is dominated by a brass element. After this, the track breaks down and is largely the drum kit and a bassline. From there, the track builds back up with brass and string elements. The main chorus repeats again. An instrumental section follows before the track fades out.

One thing about this track that I like is the back and forth between the female vocals and the hip hop style male vocals. They way it goes back and forth really did serve with track quite well. The fact that both sound good on their own certainly didn’t hurt either.

The various transitions between different different sections work quite well.

Another positive element is the bassline. It works quite well here in this track.

Overall, this is a very solid track. The vocals are great and the transitions between sections work quite well. Even the bassline sounds great. So, I would say this track is a pretty good one.
