Welcome to the 164th instalment of our first impression video series. Today, we are playing the XBox One game, Mirror’s Edge Catalyst for the first time. You can check out the video directly on YouTube or in the embed below:

A lot of people have at least heard of Mirror’s Edge, but fewer people might know that a reimaging of the game was actually put together. This came in the form of Mirror’s Edge Catalyst which is what you see above. From what I’ve heard, this game, while selling reasonably well, wasn’t that well received by critics.

As of this recording, no more entries were being added to the series. Was it the result of parkour falling out of favour by this point in time or was it because the game itself wasn’t as good as it could have been? That’s one of many questions I hope to answer for myself playing this one.

Indeed, playing through this one, I really got the sense that controls, at least the default controls, were very different from your standard game. for instance, you might assume that “A” would be the jump button, but as I found out while playing this title, it is actually left button instead. What’s more, crouch is left trigger. So, the first thing that I noticed is the fact that controls are going to take some getting used to – especially after confusing the two from time to time. It’ll be interesting if that becomes second nature to me after a while.

With that said, I wanted to hear from you. What did you think of this game? Was this an interesting game that flew under the radar or did you find this game a bit lacking?

For those who played the first title, but not this one, what did you think of what you saw? Does this look like a game that carries on what you liked about the first game or did you find that one game was more than enough for your liking?

Also, for those who have played neither game, what crossed your mind when you saw the footage of this game? Does this look like a really interesting game that provides a different take on how a game works or does it look like a game that doesn’t necessarily jive with your taste? Let us know in the comments below!

  1. I really liked Catalyst from my first steps and had a great time with it! I’ve read some voices that an Open World doesn’t fit to every game, but in this case I think it really does. From time to time I still make my way through Glass on my Series X, just to chill after a stressful day. The EA servers are down since some weeks (eg for time challenges) but the game still works fine. I liked the first Mirror’s Edge, but fell in love with Catalyst. It was way better to play for me, not so pushing like the original game (even though the old one is very challenging and more satisfying when you beat sections). The prequel story of Catalyst was good indeed imho, the soundtrack great, the clean graphics stylish (again) and the playability very nice. Thank you for mentioning this good game!

    1. You’re welcome! I look forward to getting further into this game (currently a bit behind on my reviews, so it may take a little longer than expected).
