This review covers the trance track Accadia – Into The Dawn (James Holden Remix).
This track was released in 2001 as a single.
The track starts off with a filtered synth fading in. A fair bit of it sounds like filtered white noise. After that, the kick joins the track along with the bassline. Some high hats join the track along with another percussion (also filtered, though with automation).
The synth effects drop out and other synths join the track. Some effects also make an appearance from time to time. The high hats join the track again. There is also a pitch-bent choir element. Another synth joins the track as well as the filtered percussion.
A synth effect with a delay effect then leads the track into the drop. A synth pad joins the track and has a stutter filter applied to it. After that, a synth melody plays out which contains some slower notes. Some synth effects make appearances along the way.
After that, the drum kit becomes more full again as the slow synth melody drops out. The effects continue to make appearance. A synth pad joins the track, then has a stutter effect applied to it before dropping out.
From there, the slow synth melody returns. A filtered voice sample makes a brief appearance, though subtle. A synth effect is added. The voice sample makes another appearance. Briefly, one of the synth effects becomes more prominent as other elements drop out. Everything then falls back into place as all of the elements return.
Some filtered white noise then fills out the track, and many elements drop out, leaving a few effects and some voice samples.
Next, the kick returns as well as a few more synths. Another synth with some subtle fast distance makes an appearance briefly. After another round of the effect, a chime element then makes an appearance to add some additional melody. The slow melody then returns again over top of everything else. The drum kit then drops out as the synths largely take over.
The drum kit then returns as the synth melodies drop out. Parts of the track drop out as the filtered percussion returns. The voice sample returns and some of the synth effects drop out. A new synth effect makes a few brief appearance. After another round with the voice sample, a number of synths drop out. Some filtering is then applied to the kick. A few effects make one last appearance and one of them leads the track out.
For me, one of the things that sticks out to me is the slower synth melody. On the one hand, on its own, it sounds pretty good. With the kick, however, it sounds a bit out of place. On the plus side, the huge variety of effects work quite well for this track.
Another thing I notice with the track is that it has nice variation throughout. While this is generally a positive, it is hampered by the fact that this track is also quite long. As a result, as much as I like all the variations, they only serve to help make the entire track listenable rather than make the track sound amazing.
Overall, this track has a few hits and misses. On the one hand, the main synth melody sounds nice, but with the kick, it sounds a bit off to me. The variations throughout the track sound great, but unfortunately, this track winds up being a bit long, so the variations only serve to make the track listenable, rather than elevate the track. So, in the end, it’s an OK track, but nothing huge.
