This review covers the breakbeat track Bomfunk MCs – Freestyler.
This track was released in 1999 on the album In Stereo.
The track starts with an effect and a synth melody. Some pads come in to help build the track up slowly. A guitar comes in to give this track almost a western style sound. A brief breakbeat element comes in, but goes away.
Every element save for the main synth melody drops and the vocals come in. After some scratch effects, the vocals come back to start the first verse. This is backed by breakbeat elements and a synth bassline.
The main chorus then comes in and some pads join in to elevate the track. The vocals contain some chopped elements as well. This is capped off with some scratching as well.
After an effect, the vocals come back to take the track into the next verse. Some scratch elements come in to transition the track.
After the scratch transition, the track goes into the next round of the main chorus. This is capped off with a synth and some additional scratching. This ends with the synth melody and some chopped vocals.
Some final scratching comes in before the track goes into the next round wit the main chorus. This is capped off with some more scratching and synth.
An effect signals the end of the track as it is backed by the breakbeat drum kit. The track ends with the effect.
One thing I like about the track is the hip hop vocals. Not only do the lyrics fit well, but the style also plays well to the breakbeat sound overall. Add in some chopped elements for an added effect, and you have yourself some very nice potential.
Meanwhile, the synth melody really works well to tie everything all together. There is the western style guitar at the beginning, the scratching in the middle, and the effects at the end. This is pretty eclectic, so something does need to tie everything together. For me, its the synth melody that successfully does this, so it works quite well.
Of course, the variety is very nice throughout the track. Not only does this track flow nicely from one part to another, but also plays into the free style themes throughout the track. This, of course, gets a thumbs up from me.
Overall, I found this track to be very enjoyable. The various elements really gives this track a nice audio trip throughout. With the synth melody tying everything together nicely, it makes me want to listen to the track over and over again. A great track all around.
