This review covers the indie rock track Broken Social Scene – Cause = Time.
This track was released in 2002 on the album You Forget It in People.
The track starts with a guitar and drum kit. A second guitar then joins the track. The vocals then join the track with some subtle backup vocals. They go through what I’m presuming is the main chorus. This is capped off with an instrumental section which has some string elements and feedback.
After that, the vocals return for a verse. They then take the track into the main chorus at some point. The track then goes into an instrumental section again.
From there, the vocals rejoin the track again. An instrumental section then rejoins the track. A guitar solo also makes an appearance at some point.
The instrumentals largely drop out. The tempo also slows down as the vocals rejoin the track. They take the track into the main chorus at this slowed tempo. This is capped off with another instrumental section again. After that, a synth effect takes the track out.
The first thing that I hear in this track is the mastering – and not in a good way. Everything seems to sound somehow thrown in a blender and everything struggles to take centre stage. Vocals can be hard to hear and sometimes sound garbled.
As for the formula this uses, based on what I heard, it sounds like it’s just meandering all over the place somewhat aimlessly.
Overall, this track is highly forgettable. The mastering is pretty bad in and of itself that I heard where almost everything sounds drowned out. There’s not much to really get excited for in this track. So, one to simply toss out after a listen or two before moving on.
