This review covers the house track Circulation – Turquoise (differentGear Remix).
This track was released in 2001.
The track starts off with a standard drum kit. A synth pad then starts to fade in. A synth effect that sounds like a vinyl scratch then appears with some reverb. Another synth effect makes a brief appearance before the drum kit fills out. A subtle bassline also joins the track. A synth melody then gradually fades in.
After another synth effect makes an appearance, parts of the track drop out. Another synth melody joins the track, taking over. Those elements then start to fade out before the drum kit returns along with the previous elements. The second synth melody returns and is joined by a third synth melody.
A pad then makes an appearance. Another synth effect makes an appearance before a brief voice sample makes an appearance. A stutter effect is then applied to the voice sample before playing out. The drum kit also drops out. At some point, the entire drum kit drops out.
When the drum kit returns, the synth melodies continue. The voice sample drops out as well. After a bit, the voice sample returns, layered over top of the other elements. This climactic part of the track continues for some time.
The synth melodies then drop out, signalling the beginning of the break down. A few other elements also drop out. After another round of the effect, the voice sample makes one last appearance. The synth pad then leads the track out.
One thing this track has going for it is the laid back sound overall. It’s not too much energy, but at the same time, it’s not really boring either. The overall sound really makes this track one to chill out to. In fact, it would be a recommendation of mine if you want something to chill out to.
One thing I’m on the fence about is the variations throughout. On the one hand, this track is constantly evolving. So, really, it does stay fresh from beginning to end. The only caveat is the fact that those variations are subtle. So, for those more new to this kind of music, it might almost all sound the same for the most part. I think you might need a bit of an ear for subtle changes to appreciate the variations, so some might consider this a bit on the elite side of things.
Overall, this is a pretty decent track to listen to. It has a great well realized atmosphere throughout. It would definitely be a track I’d recommend if you want something to chill out to. The variations are nicely done, though those variations may be a bit subtle for some listeners. Still, I’d give this track a thumbs up.
