This review covers the trance track Ernesto vs Bastian – Lonely People.
This track was released in 2002 alone with the track She’s Drifting.
The track starts with a simple drum kit with less emphasis on lower frequencies. Some high hats are introduced along with a synth effect. A guitar makes brief appearances as well. The kick is then added. Another synth effect or two is added. A few more synth effects are then applied.
From there, the drum kit largely drops out as the bassline takes over backed with an effect. The drum kit then returns and the effect drops out. Alterations to the drum kit then take place. A synth string makes a short appearance. A second bassline is added as the first one makes some variations. Some sweeps make an appearance. Synth strings then join the track as large chunks of the drum kit drops out.
After a cymbal crash, the pads then gradually fade out. A voice sample then makes an appearance as a synth melody plays out. A piano also joins the track as the extensive voice sample continues. Some synths then fade in at the end as some other effects make subtle appearances here as well. Claps also join the track.
From there, the synths drop out partly as the drum kit and bassline makes a return. The drum kit briefly drops out as a part of that long voice sample makes a brief appearance. The brief guitar and other effects make brief appearances as well at this stage. The voice sample makes another appearance, then stutters and fades out. On the third appearance of the voice sample, some delay effects are applied.
After a synth effect, the track continues with some synth strings making a temporary appearance. The effects then continue. Upon the next appearance, a cheering sample makes an appearance. The drum kit briefly drops out before continuing. After a bit, some synth effects continue along with a stuttered chopped sample of the vocal making a brief appearance.
From there, some of the synth effects drop out. More drop out after a bit, leaving largely the drum kit. A synth string makes a brief appearance as the drum kit fades out. The drum kit then drops out after a symbol crash, leaving the synth string to lead the track out.
For me, one of the strengths of the track is the layering. It really builds up quite nicely and offers a lot of variety.
Another positive is the voice sample which really gives it a nice defining characteristic and mood. This track is especially strong right after the drop hits.
The problem with the track is that it seems to shy away from layering too much. When the synth strings are added, I think that we are really kicking things off, but the strings then fade out right as their starting. Some additional synths are then added, but they too fade out. It’s like it’s hard for the artist to commit to anything for some reason. As a result, the track feels like its holding back a lot.
Overall, this is a pretty decent track. It’s disappointing that it held back a fair bit as things started getting good. Still, the voice sample and the parts shortly after the drop work quite well. So, this track certainly has merit. So, a solid track, but could easily have been better.
