This review covers the trance track Freefall feat. Jan Johnston – Skydive (I Feel Wonderful) (Warrior Remix).
This track was released in 2001 as part of a sampler.
The track starts off with an abbreviated drum kit and a bassline. A reverse cymbal makes an appearance. Other high hats along with some added percussion elements join the track. A secondary bassline joins the track. After that, a synth melody joins the track. Another high hat then joins the track. There is the occasional cymbal crash throughout. The synth melody then gradually drops out gradually.
From there, the kick and bassline is all that’s left as the main vocals join the track. Those vocals hit a verse and have a delay effect added to them. A line in the main chorus is sung out as some synth chords join the track. A long delay effect is applied to the vocals. The one line is repeated. Another synth melody eventually joins the track part way through. Part of the track then drop out.
After that, the drop hits, leaving only a synth melody and the vocals going through the next verse. One of the other melodies joins the track. After a brief moment in the main chorus, the main vocals continue on to the rest of the verse. The vocals then hit the main chorus. Parts of the track gradually fade in. A snare roll also makes an appearance, going along with the buildup. After another round with the short main chorus, the rest of the track fills out with the main melody along with other elements.
The main vocals then expands on the main chorus. After a bit, the main vocals drop out, leaving the rest of the track. A filter is then applied to parts of the track, eventually allowing them to fade out. This leaves the bassline and most of the drum kit. A reverse cymbal makes an appearance and parts of the drum kit drop out. More filtering is added to parts of the drum kit. A snare roll makes an appearance and a reverse cymbal leads the track out.
One of the big positives that stands out in this track is the vocals. They work quite well in this track. The only real problem is that the abbreviated version of the main chorus is used so often. Because of this, it holds the vocals back just a little bit. Not overly so, but it does have that effect.
The different melodies work quite well. I like how a number of them are layered like that. With the added effects, this track really offers a nice full sound overall.
Overall, I’d say this is a very solid track. It has a lot of good qualities. The vocals really are the shining star here, but what backs them up certainly works quite well. I’m not entirely sure about how the main chorus is presented in this one, but that’s a minor issue in my mind. Overall, a worthwhile track to listen to.
