This review covers the alternative rock track Hole – Retard Girl.
This track was released in 1997 on the album My Body, the Hand Grenade.
The track starts off with a bass guitar. A drum kit then joins the track along with some lead guitars. The vocals then come in with what I assume is the main chorus. This is backed by some backup vocals.
From there, the vocals take the track into a verse. The guitars change a little, but that’s about it. The vocals then take the track into the main chorus again with some slight alterations to the guitars. A short instrumental section comes in.
After that, the vocals take the track into the next verse. The vocals take the track into the main chorus again. A secondary guitar does make an appearance hear. From there, the vocals drop out and a brief guitar solo comes in.
The vocals then continue into the next verse. After that, the vocals go into something I’m not even entirely sure what it even is. The vocals then go into a modified main chorus. This is extended for some time. The vocals then end and some guitars and slight feedback comes in. After that, the track just simply ends.
As someone who has heard some good music from this band, this is certainly a puzzling thing to hear. Some of the guitars are very repetitive and simply don’t do a whole lot. The secondary guitar adds only a hint of variety.
The vocals are randomly screaming and just don’t add a whole lot to the track. Finally, the lyrics are simply messy which is compounded with the mastering which washes out the vocals a bit.
Overall, this track doesn’t really add up to much. At most, it’s a self-reflection piece whose abstract nature easily gets lost in the shuffle. The mastering washes out the vocals a bit which only worsens the messy lyrics and random screaming. With repetitive guitar elements that don’t really offer much to the overall track, this one is a disappointing flop.
