Review: Mystery – The Mystery (Above & Beyond Remix) (Trance)

This review covers the trance track Mystery – The Mystery (Above & Beyond Remix).

This track was released in 2001 along with two other versions.

The track starts with a reverse kick. After that, large parts of the drum kit kick things off. Some percussion work with filtering is brought in with the filtering gradually being pulled back. A bassline then joins the track. A synth effect also makes an appearance. The clap then joins the track. After that, synth chords joins the track. Additional synth effects joins the track as well.

When a snare roll appears, some choir-like synth pads join the track. The rest of the track drops out. After that, the main synth quietly joins the track. The filtering then quickly pulls back as the main synth comes into the track in full. That drum kit from earlier rejoins the track. Those chords from earlier also rejoins the track. A filter than briefly hits the track.

After that, the bassline and drum kit takes over. A few other synth effects also make occasional appearance. The synth chords rejoin the track. An additional synth joins the track as well.

From there, the kick is layered with a cymbal crash and the main synth rejoins the track. The chords and drum kit then rejoins the track. A snare roll makes an appearance and the main synth drops out after another cymbal crash. After a reverse kick, the chords drop out, leaving mostly the drum kit, bassline, and synth effects. The bassline gradually fades out. After a reverse kick, the synths largely drop out. Another cymbal crash makes an appearance and a synth effect leads the track out.

One thing that this track has going for it is the fact that it is well constructed. The way this track progresses works quite well with the different effects and layering techniques employed.

A bit drawback in this track is the main synth. Don’t get me wrong, it sounds great, but it sounds too similar to Rank 1 – Airwave. All I can get out of this is, “Erm, I’ve heard this before.”

It’s an OK track. It has nice production quality and a good construction to it. Unfortunately, it uses an all too familiar sound of another track with only minor variations. It’s still a decent track to listen to, but nothing too amazing.

Score
6.5/10
