Review: The Offspring – Gone Away (Rock)

This review covers the alternative rock track The Offspring – Gone Away.

This track was released in 1997 as a single.

The track starts with a drum kit with am emphasis on tom drums and high hats. The lead guitars then come in. From there, the lead guitars drop out gradually as the vocals come in for the first verse.

After that, the vocals take the track into the main chorus. The lead guitars rejoin the track in this part. This section is capped off with an instrumental section.

From there, the lead guitars gradually drop out as the vocals take the track into the next verse. Some additional guitars rejoin the track part way in. After a snare roll, the vocals take the track into another round in the main chorus. The vocals extend the main chorus in a non-lyrical manner. The lead guitars then drop out as more acoustic guitars rake over.

When the lead guitars rejoin the track, the vocals rejoin the track in a non-lyrical manner. After that, a short instrumental section follows before the vocals return for another verse.

From there, the vocals return the track into the main chorus. The vocals extend the main chorus in a non-lyrical manner. From there, the drum kit hits a final snare roll before the lead guitars lead the track out.

For me, I notice the lyrics pretty quickly. The lyrics are about personal loss, so there are plenty of people that can easily relate to this track. This is a positive thing in my view.

The guitars work pretty well here. They manage to capture the energy that is rock, but at the same time, echo the emotions expressed through the lyrics which is a pretty good thing.

The only thing I’m not sure about is some of the non-lyrical vocals in the track. I get that it’s an Offspring trademark, but I’m not sure if that really helps the track in this case.

Still, this is a very solid track. It has deep and emotional lyrics that can easily connect with people. The guitars are quite solid. While I’m not sure about some of the non-lyrical vocal sections, this track still manages to perform quite nicely. A very solid track.
