This review covers the trance track Sonorous – Second Sun (Mirco de Govia Remix).
This track was released in 2002 along with the original mix.
The track starts with a synth pad. A synth effect makes an appearance before the main synth melody appears. This main synth has a lot of reverberation added to it. A choir element makes a very short appearance. A subtle drum kit makes an appearance along with a synth. Another synth pad also makes an appearance. After a synth effect, the pads fade out, leaving a few effects.
After a long reverse cymbal, the kick makes an appearance. A cymbal crash makes an appearance followed up by a long reverse cymbal. After two synth effects, parts o the drum kit drop out for a moment before returning. A sweep makes an appearance as well. One of the synth pads makes a brief appearance. The bassline then joins the track. Parts of the main synth melody makes a subtle appearance. Some automation is applied to the bassline (possibly a layered element).
Some synths then joins the track. The kick then hits a drill effect before the drum kit largely drops out again. A slightly different drum kit configuration temporarily replaces this before it, too, drops out. The synths largely take over. After a kick with heavy reverberation, the synths largely take over.
The main synth melody joins the track in a subtle manner before coming in full. Other effects make appearances, but everything is backed by the synth pads. The altered kick makes an appearance. A subtle secondary melody takes over. After a kick, the drum kit largely drops out. A quiet snare roll then makes an appearance.
After that, the drum kit continues along with the synths. Another snare roll makes an appearance as the main synth melody makes a return. Another synth pad joins the track part way through. After a reverberated kick, the secondary drum kit configuration takes over with other synths dropping out. The main synth melody drops out. Then, the main drum kit configuration continues with a synth and bassline. A slow reverse cymbal makes an appearance and parts of the drum kit drops out. A reverberated kick makes an appearance and the synth drops out. The long reverse cymbal makes an appearance and the alternate drum kit configuration takes over. A sweep makes an appearance, then the pads and reverse cymbal leads the track out.
One thing I do like about the track is the main synth melody. It isn’t much, but it has a rather interesting set of effects applied to it. As such, it actually gives the track a rather mysterious sound throughout. I would have liked to have heard some alternate note patterns at some point given that this plays throughout almost the entire track, but it is an interesting element to say the least.
Another thing I do like about the track is the synth pads. They really help give the track a nice full sound. The other synths do help a fair bit in that regard as well.
A part of me can’t help but wonder if this track might have been better off as an ambient track, though. With the overall mood it this track presents, the faster beat and higher energy of other elements does make the mysterious sound throughout seem a bit out of place.
Still, it’s not a bad track. It’s got some pretty interesting elements throughout. The main synth melody and the synth pads really do work quite well. Other synth elements are nicely layered on. It might be a slight genre mismatch in the end, but you could do a whole lot worse than listen to this one.
