This review covers the pop rock track Sugar Ray – Answer the Phone.
This track was released in 2001 on a self-titled album.
The track starts with a guitar. The drum kit then kicks in along with the other guitars. The vocals then come in for a verse. One of the guitars rejoins the track part way through.
A few snare hits and the vocals take the track into the main chorus. After a cymbal crash, the vocals then enter into the next verse with the guitars pulled back.
After a few more snare’s, the the vocals take the track into the main chorus. At the end of the section, a backup vocal joins as the track goes into the bridge. After that, the drum kit pulls back briefly as the guitar hits an acoustic portion again.
The vocals then return as the drum kit and guitars return. Shortly after, the vocals take the track into the main chorus. The main chorus is extended in that last instance. The guitars then lead the track out with an added stutter effect.
For me, the first thing I notice is the nicely done guitars. It has a nice slightly softer rock vibe because of it.
The vocals is also nicely done. I don’t have anything against the vocals, really.
The only thing is that it’s possible to misinterpret the lyrics a bit and think there is a sinister underlying current embedded here. I don’t think it’s the intention, though that interpretation can be made.
Overall, though, it’s a pretty solid track. It’s got good vibes from the guitar and the vocals work nicely. Lyrics can be misinterpreted, but otherwise, I’d say it’s a worthwhile track to listen to.
