This review covers the punk rock track Sum 41 – What I Believe.
This track was released in 2000 on the album Half Hour of Power.
Previously, we reviewed Makes No Difference from the same album. We found that track to be a very solid one. So, we thought we’d try another track from the album to see if it’s just as enjoyable.
The track starts with a guitar panned to the right. The other guitars come in along with the drum kit.
After the brief instrumental section, the vocals come in for a verse. Everything drops out except the vocal for a brief second before the vocals take the track into the main chorus. That section is capped off with an instrumental section.
From there, the vocals take the track into the next verse. For a brief moment, the backup vocals stand out alone before the main vocals return. This is capped off with an instrumental with an emphasis on the drum kit.
After that, the vocals take the track into the main chorus again. Parts of the main chorus is then repeated before the guitars lead the track out.
One thing that really stands out for me is definitely the guitars. Those instrumental sections work very well here. In a way, they offer that fresh sound that works so well.
Another positive is the vocals. Most of the time, it’s layered with the backup vocals. That layering is subtle, but it adds a nice dimension to the overall sound. Both the main vocals and backup vocals add to the overall sound. They way they play off of each other works quite well here.
The instrumental with the emphasis on the drum kit also works quite well. It gives the track that added sense of progression throughout.
Overall, this is a very solid track. It’s an enjoyable track that doesn’t really have any real weaknesses. The vocals work, the guitars work, and the drum kit adds some nice variety. Overall, it’s a very solid track worth listening to.
