This review covers the satirical track “Weird Al” Yankovic – The Night Santa Went Crazy.
This track was released in 1996 on the album Bad Hair Day. It should be noted that this track is an original and doesn’t actually parody any track in particular.
The track starts off with some guitars and a chime element. The drum kit is also present. From there, the vocals take the track into the first verse.
After a slow snare roll, the vocals then take the track into the first chorus. Some lead guitars join the track.
From there, the vocals take the track into the next verse. Lead guitars rejoin the track here. After that, the vocals take the track into a modified main chorus. The vocals then continue into a verse. This is capped off with sounds of screaming and gun shots.
After that, the vocals take the track into the next verse. The lead guitars rejoin the track part way through. Then, the vocals take the track into a yet again modified version of the main chorus. The vocals then extend the main chorus. After that, the track winds down with the chime and guitars – both of which lead the track out.
A lot of people expect Weird Al’s music to be funny. This track is certainly no exception. The tracks lyrics are quite juvenile and gory. Yet, somehow, it ends up being quite funny anyway. Not only are the lyrics funny, but they end up telling a full fledged story. That is very well done. The only caveat is that one of the lines may be offensive to gypsies.
The backing elements such as the chimes and the lead guitars are well done. They compliment the lyrics quite nicely. Some of the nicer elements are backed by the lightly Christmasy chimes while the more R rated material is backed by the lead guitars. They even help make the main chorus catchy in the process.
Overall, this is a great track. It has well done lyrics. The backing elements compliment the track very nicely. While it might be offensive to gypsies for one of the lines, I still consider it a great listen otherwise.
