Star Fox Adventures Unlocked for Early Access!

This months early access review, as nominated by Patrons, is Star Fox Adventures. You can read this review right now!

I got which game you requested for the early access review. This month, you picked Star Fox Adventures.

This game was actually kind of interesting for me beyond the game itself. When I was younger and subscribed to Nintendo Power, I was playing numerous N64 games and having the time of my life with the games (which was great because not a whole lot else was going well in my life back then).

Back then, I was quite interested in what was forthcoming. An example was what was then called “Project Dolphin”. Like a number of other people back then, I was visualizing a console shaped like a dolphin and every game cartridge being shaped like a fish you’d feed into the console to play games. Hey, to me, it was a cool concept and I don’t think I was alone (I read a letter where someone else described this very thing later on).

There were games being discussed as being forthcoming. This include the now cancelled Earthbound 64 (my disappointment over that was immeasurable), the concept art of a game called Pikmin (which I was kind of curious about how a game like that would ultimately play), and, of course, this interesting game called “Dinosaur Planet” which was supposed to star Krystal as the main protagonist. Like others, I thought that would be one of the last games released on the incredible Nintendo 64, but as it turned out, it would be later shifted over to what everyone now knows is the Nintendo GameCube.

While I was wanting a Nintendo Gamecube so I could play these games back then, that ultimately never happened. I started going to University and my time with gaming was extremely limited. I was DJing at the campus radio pumping out trance and drum n bass music (along with some other genre’s from time to time for variety) to other students who were surprised at how good the music actually was (yes, I’ve had that affect on people even back in those days) and writing columns about technology at the student newspaper (part of my early days of tech news writing). As a result, my time with video games was severely limited. As a result, I never got a chance to play GameCube games when it was new.

So, fast forward all these years later, I finally got a chance to play these games. I discovered that the quality of Nintendo games dipped moving from the N64 to the GameCube. There was still entertainment to be had with these games, to be sure, it just wasn’t that legendary quality I was used to on the N64, SNES, and NES. Animal Planet, officially titled Starfox Adventures, was one of those games. Was it a good game? Sure, I’m not going to argue that point. Was it an incredible experience? Not really. At any rate, my curiosity of games released on the GameCube (and Playstation 2 for that matter) was satisfied many years later.

I think if I did get a chance to play GameCube games back in the day, I think my response would’ve been that maybe my interest in gaming has wained a bit. I might not have given the Playstation 2 a chance back then, but I’m glad I ultimately did years later because that console had a lot of great games as well. Anyway, I digress.
