Today in our annual tradition of looking back at the year that was, we decided to count down the top 10 best games we’ve reviewed in 2023.
While there were definitely some lowlights in 2023, we are now starting 2024 on a much more optimistic note by figuring out what we remember most fondly in 2023. So, here is our top 10 list for the best games we’ve reviewed all year.
10. Super Mario Advance 4 – Super Mario Bros 3 (Game Boy Advance):
It’s a re-release of a NES title, but it’s still a great worthwhile game to play. Not only are there multiple ways of playing this game, but there are also a few features to add to the replay value of this game. Great gameplay clearly carried over from the NES now in the palms of your hands.
Score: 80%
9. Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus (Playstation 2):
The first of an interesting series. This adventure game has a number of the general features you’d expect. However, it also boasts an interesting stealth element as well. With great storytelling on top of it all, this game is definitely a recommended one.
Score: 80%
8. Ratchet & Clank (Playstation 2):
Another adventure game, but with it’s own twist. This time, you are given an arsenal of weapons to lay waste on your enemies. Definitely a great start to what turned out to be a series.
Score: 82%
7. Yoshi’s Island: Super Mario Advance 3 (Game Boy Advance):
Another re-release that is brought over to the handheld. This time, it’s a SNES game that takes what made the original great and crams it into an even smaller screen. It still manages to be a great worthwhile game in the end.
Score: 82%
6. Sly 2: Band of Thieves (Playstation 2)
Yet another adventure game. This time, it is the second game in the series. This one takes what was great in the original and makes it even better in this sequel. Another great game in the series.
Score: 82%
5. Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando (Playstation 2):
Hey, sounding like a broken record is super cool, right? This adventure game takes what is great in the original game and makes it even better. Another great game in the series.
Score: 84%
4. Burnout 3: Takedown (Playstation 2):
And breaking the impressively long combo of adventure game, this combat racing game manages to take this series to the next level. It features great collisions, action, points and nitro system, and great graphics. The nicely done soundtrack certainly didn’t hurt either.
Score: 86%
3. Re-Volt (N64):
This game offers high end racing action and miniaturizes it into the fun of RC cars. While this novelty does make for some interesting play, the fact that this game manages to pack a full fledged track editor and a large stunt course really took this game to the next level. Bet you never thought an N64 game was capable of that, did you?
Score: 86%
2. Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal (Playstation 2):
Of the first three games in the series, many say that the third game is the best in the series. We pretty much agree. This game manages to keep a lot of what was great and nudges up the quality just that much further. It’s so great, it manages to take the runner-up position in this years great games list. Definitely a worthwhile game.
Score: 86%
1. We Love Katamari (Playstation 2):
This years winner goes to arguably the most unique game on the whole list. This puzzle game takes what made the first game so entertaining and takes it to the next level. We can safely say this series is certainly on a roll. A fantastic game all around.
