As the punishing tariffs loom, a Trump official is already looking at how he will redraw the borders after Canada surrenders.
Donald Trump hates Canada. He hates it so much that he is putting tremendous effort to ensure that this country ceases to exist. Unless there is some last minute stupid drama, a 25% tariff is going to be slapped on Canada on Tuesday for no reason other than Trump has a high treason fetish and is actively working on destroying America.
On Thursday, Canadian news broadcasters stupidly tried to rationalize the irrational president and speculated that this whole thing is just bluster and possibly a negotiating tactic. They also tried to float the argument that Trump actually gives a flying fuck about border security between Canada and the US. Spoiler alert: Trump doesn’t. As I’ve said when Trump previously issued these tariff threats, border security is nothing more than a red herring. The fact is that the Canada US border is sufficiently secured. What’s more, everyone knows that the Canada US border isn’t actually problematic. So, why did the Trump administration even mention it in the first place? Simply put, he needed a legal reason to declare economic war with Canada in an effort to burn as many international bridges as possible.
During the first round of threats, the mainstream media, again, tried rationalizing the irrational president by saying that maybe this whole thing was just bluster and that he wouldn’t really follow through with it. They tried arguing it was a negotiating tactic of some sort as well. Those arguments blew up in their faces when on the eve of these tariffs taking effect, Trump said that there was nothing Canada could do to avert this action. Trump was pressed and asked if there was any concession Canada could make and Trump simply responded by saying “no”. Some media talking heads started exhibiting signs that they were starting to have a mental breakdown as they started to wonder if Canada had a future at that point. At least that was understandable because they realized that all that explaining things away was actually fruitless and their world came crashing down at that particular moment whereas people like myself knew this was the potential reality for much longer.
In fact, all of this was the primary reason why I sent an open letter to the Prime Minister and my provincial premier urging them to form stronger trade relationships with other nations. Specifically, I argued that Canada has no shot at winning a tit-for-tat trade war with the US over the long term, so it is more important than ever to form a sort of trade “NATO” to protect ourselves from the United States. Specifically, institute a policy where a tariff against one nation is a tariff against all. In that respect, we would be combining the economic power of multiple nations, giving Canada (and everyone else for that matter) an economic fighting chance to stave off the insanity of the American presidency. The letter was logical and reasonable and is likely among the reasons why it probably got ignored. Still, can’t say I did nothing in light of all of this.
Of course, as you know, those stupid tariffs got delayed. Why is that? Simply put, Canadian government officials were quite effectively banging the drums of counter tariffs. You hit us and we’re prepared to hit back because we, as a nation, will stand up for our interests. In response, Trump ordered a one month delay, realizing that he was going to take a huge hit.
Well, fast forward a month later and we are returning to the exact same position. From the CBC:
U.S. President Donald Trump says he will end a month-long pause and slap a 25 per cent tariff on most Canadian goods as of March 4, claiming he needs to take action because “drugs are still pouring into our country” despite evidence that a crackdown at the border is working.
Trump said in a social media post Thursday that fentanyl imports are killing people and the U.S. “cannot allow this scourge to continue to harm the USA” and he will levy a 25 per cent tariff on Canada “until it stops, or is seriously limited.”
He also says his threatened reciprocal tariffs on specific goods set to come into effect in April “will remain in full force and effect.”
Here’s the problem with Trump’s comments. Fentanyl coming across the border from Canada to the US is already seriously limited. Only a tiny fraction of a percentage of fentanyl coming into the US is coming from Canada. Those statistics are all readily available. For instance, here’s that citation from CNN:
Trump has lumped together the Canadian border and the Mexican border when talking about illegal fentanyl imports. The day after his inauguration in January, for example, he said, “The fentanyl coming through Canada is massive. The fentanyl coming through Mexico is massive.”
But there is a massive difference between the extent of the problem at the two borders.
Federal statistics show US border authorities seized 21,889 pounds of fentanyl in the 2024 fiscal year. Of that amount, 43 pounds were seized at the Canadian border — about 0.2% — compared with 21,148 pounds at the Mexican border, about 96.6%.
There’s no indication of any substantial change in the first three months of the 2025 fiscal year (October 2024 through December 2024). Of the 4,537 pounds of fentanyl seized by US border authorities during that period, 10 pounds, about 0.2%, were seized at the Canadian border, while 4,409 pounds, about 97.2%, were seized at the Mexican border.
Compounding things is the fact that Canada tried appeasing the American fascist leader by even going so far as to appoint a fentanyl czar on top of it all. From CBC:
Canadian fentanyl czar Kevin Brosseau says American officials are showing their approval for his new role as he and several other top officials are in Washington to show Canada’s successes at stopping the flow of drugs and migrants.
In an interview with CBC’s The House on Wednesday, Brosseau said his role makes him a central contact for U.S. officials to discuss their concerns with fentanyl flowing across the Canada-U.S. border.
“They have that clear understanding with me being here,” Brosseau told host Catherine Cullen. “So it’s resonated really well. I’d say the reaction has been very positive.”
Yet, despite all of these facts, the Trump administration has simply responded by effectively saying “not good enough” and said that he is going ahead with the tariffs anyway. This pretty much further underlines my point that border security between Canada and the US is little more than a red herring.
At the very least, it seems that some lawmakers get that even if some in the mainstream media doesn’t. Hopefully, over the weekend and leading into next week, they’ll bang the drum of counter tariffs once again. After all, that was the real reason why Trump got cold feet the first time. The thing that I noticed, however, is that either Canadian officials aren’t quite as loud this time around or the media is choosing not to cover that.
So, the worry now is that Trump might get the idea that the threat of counter tariffs aren’t quite as severe and has decided that this is the time to hit Canada in a nicely unprovoked manner. To punctuate this, it seems that at least one Trump official has decided to start planning on how he wants to see Canada carved up once the country surrenders to the US. From MSN:
A senior White House trade adviser has threatened to redraw the U.S.-Canada border, according to The Telegraph.
Peter Navarro, officially President Donald Trump’s senior counselor for trade and manufacturing, is “ruling the roost,” sources told the paper. “Navarro recommended revising the Canada-U.S. border, which is just crazy and dangerous,” a source close to the negotiations told the British broadsheet.
The newspaper reported that Navarro, who recently denied reports that he wants Canada booted from the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing network, wants U.S. officials to work with their Canadian counterparts to tinker with the border line.
Canada, however, doesn’t want to get drawn into the issue and won’t entertain trade negotiations until old frenemies Jamieson Greer and Howard Lutnick are ready to go to work, after the former was confirmed by the Senate on Wednesday. Lutnick was confirmed as commerce secretary on Feb. 18.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Trump and his ilk can go fuck themselves.
So, unless there is some drama at the last minute, people on both sides of the border are staring down the barrel of Trumps inflationary tariffs. Even worse is that this would only be the first round as well since there are others that are coming further down the line. How do you like them eggs?
The whole situation is frustrating and literally everyone involved is going to get hurt. What’s more, nothing about any of this was even close to being necessary or deserved. Yet, here we are being threatened by the United States for no good reason. What a nightmare.
Go West, young man! For trading partners who are likely to be in Trump’s firing line just for the mere fact they exist, there’s the ASEAN countries, there’s Australia and New Zealand, both of which are looking increasingly worried, and the rest of the South Pacific Forum countries, none of which are likely to want to be on the receiving end of Trump’s ire, but are very likely to be soon. And there’s the Middle East and Africa, Central Asia, and Latin America …
